INTRODUCTION As told by Frankie
My name is Frankie, and if you look into my eyes, you will see that I am creature who feels things deeply. You might even call me soulful, I suppose. The philosopher Martin Buber once said, “An animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language,” and I think it’s clear just by looking at me that I have a HUGE vocabulary.
There’s so much I want to tell you about myself. About my hopes and dreams, my past and my future. My past wasn’t a lot of fun. After working three years, I retired from breeding. My beautiful, roly-poly puppies found lives of promise and comfort, with families who shower them with love and affection. But I stayed with the breeder. I think you can see some of that story in my eyes. But fortunately, my luck changed. I was relinquished to As Good as Gold, and now I have the opportunity to seek a family of my own.
My foster mom, who says I’m very sweet, has been amazing. She welcomed me into her very own house! There I met three other rescue dogs. Together, with mom’s patient guidance, we are learning the ways of the world and to trust each other, and people.
I’m a very well-behaved dog who will make a wonderful companion. I am terribly fond of my foster mom, and I let her touch me and groom me whenever she wants. It’s such a treat to be the object of affection! I have shown no aggressive or nuisance behaviors. The only thing I need to work on is getting more confident about my place in the world. I tend to stay in the background, letting my foster friends rush in the house first or get treats ahead of me. I think I am still learning that I deserve a place at the table, too.
New people or things can make me nervous at first, and I might retreat to my crate, which is my safe place. But I will eventually warm up if you give me time. I also need time to recover from things that frighten me. For example, poor mom slipped on the stairs not long ago. Luckily, she is fine, but I was so concerned for her – and afraid that I, too, might fall – that it’s taking me a while to get comfortable on those stairs again. But if mom escorts me up the steps, I am fine – because I have learned to trust her.
One thing I absolutely LOVE to do is to play outside and fetch tennis balls! I will do that for hours if you let me. And I make it fun for you, too, by eagerly bringing the ball back so we can do it over and over and over again.
Look into my eyes. Hear my story. Invite me into your family so that it becomes our family. Teach me to trust you. Help me learn to leave the past in the past and turn my eyes toward the future, for “If the past was what we were meant to see/Then behind, not in front, our eyes would be.”
