Leilani is the prettiest, sweetest, and most gentle dog I have ever met, most of the time. If there is ever something she doesn’t want to do she can be stubborn and refuse to move. She has a number of great attributes that some of our past dogs did not have- she doesn’t bark, she doesn’t jump on furniture, and she doesn’t counter surf. She is so gentle when taking a treat you offer to her. A few days after we got her, we had a thunderstorm, and she just shook. I came and sat by her and held her and petted her. Then when another storm came in the middle of the night she came and stood by my side of the bed, and I petted her. Now if there is ever a storm she just comes and lies by my side of the bed.

She was quite timid when we first adopted her at the age of 6 just 3 months ago. She was a former breeder dog. It was a little difficult to even take her on a walk in her new surroundings. Now she loves to go for a walk and does a little dancing routine by the door when she knows we are going. When we are by ourselves, she is excellent at walking right by my side. The problem is she has come to love all the people and dogs in our neighborhood and when she sees them, she wants to run to them to play or get petted.

She was afraid to get into Wayne’s SUV when we first adopted her. By working with her, she can easily get into his van now, which takes only one step up to get in. She has learned that going on the ride means something fun at the end like going on a new walk or going to another dog’s house to play. We are still working on our second SUV as that takes a couple of steps up to get into.

When I was young, I had wanted either an Irish setter or a golden retriever. Many people think Leilani is an Irish Setter because of her color. Our previous dog, Sebastian, who we also adopted from As Good as Gold, was a golden retriever/labrador retriever mix. He was golden in color but had the short hair of a lab. Now we have our little red, full-golden retriever. How cool is that! We loved Sebastian and thought he was the best dog we ever had, as high an energy dog as he was. We got him as a puppy and were sorry to lose him last year at the age of 14. Now with us getting older, mellow Leilani is the perfect dog for us. Adoption Process
ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS, NO EXCEPTIONS:

  • Be at least 23 years of age

  • No children under 6 years of age living in your home

  • We primarily adopt goldens to families living within Illinois, Northwest Indiana, and the southern most counties of Wisconsin

  • If you do not own your residence or live in a condo, you will need a letter from your landlord or property management company

  • Provide excellent vet care for your dog(s)

  • Do not use an invisible fence

  • Are not over your town/county's pet limit

  • Have the knowledge and agreement of all adults living in the household

  • Be prepared to make a lifetime commitment
