Tucker ... Safe and Loved
My birthday was December 1, but December 13 turned out to be the day I would have reason to celebrate! That was the day I was picked up by people who could help me. I was found lying on the side of the road in northern Illinois. When animal control picked me up, their next step was to have me quickly assessed by a veterinarian; I was not in good shape. They found that I was dehydrated, thin, and had a seeping and infected wound on my hip. It was later discovered to be a ruptured cancerous tumor. The vet noted that I also suffered from laryngeal paralysis, which means the muscles of the larynx weren’t moving properly leading to inadequate ventilation, panting, and even swallowing difficulty. I was given fluids, antibiotics, medication to help my breathing, and lots of hugs—oh, I loved those hugs! A nice lady patted me and softly told me I was “sweet.” I loved that, too!
Since then, I have found more to celebrate! As Good as Gold took me in, and I am now living with my foster mom and furry foster siblings; I have a family, and I want to be near them all the time. My furry siblings and I investigate the back yard together and then come inside for a group nap.
It’s oh so comforting being with my foster mom. One way she cares for me is by keeping my wound clean. She told me that to keep the bandage in place she was going to have me wear a belly band. I know she’s trying to keep me comfortable, so I cooperate.
You know another way foster mom cares for me? By giving me scrumptious food! I might be sickly and old, but I sure enjoy mealtime and treats!
I feel blessed to have a roof over my head, to have animal companionship, to enjoy the smells of the outdoors and the aroma of great food
I heard mom talking with the vet. I know I have a cancer that will shorten my life—I can kind of sense that. The tumor is 4” in diameter and in a difficult position, so is considered inoperable. The vet also found many other cancerous growths on my body. I’m not in pain, though my body can’t get as comfortable as when I was a pup.
Mom’s with me almost all the time. Sometimes, though, she has to work at her computer. I love the smile she gives me as I nose my way through the arm of her chair wriggling my way to put my head on her lap.
My family and I sleep peacefully together throughout the night. We will be together until my final rest. I’m at peace.
